It was hot, hitting over 100, and humid today. A very sweaty day.
We went to Laura Ingalls Wilder home in Mansfield Missouri. This was where she wrote the Little House series and spent the last 50 years of her life and is buried there. The house she lived in is still there and in good condition. Her husband built it room by room over many years. He did a heck of a job too.
Here is Tarin on the steps of the house

We drove a while and after we had dinner in Joplin we decided to cross the border into Kansas to make our way to Independence for the night. Well we didn't take the proper turn and ended up on the Will Rogers Turnpike in Oklahoma. Ending up in Oklahoma was a lot easier than it sounds. I am not entirely sure this wasn't some sort of cheap trick by Oklahoma because once you find out you are on the Turnpike there is no getting off of it until you drive about 15 miles and cough up some dough. When we got off the Turnpike the guy asked us if we got on at the Missouri side or further down in Oklahoma. We told him that we got on at the Missouri side and he made us pay 50 cents. I like how they work on the honesty system down there, it must save on Turnpike tickets.
Our detour slowed us down a bit and we got behind schedule getting into Independence. Just when we started getting back on track Julian got an extra burst of energy (that's right, above normal levels) and things started looking a little dicey. We had no hotel room yet and when I started checking for hotels they were mostly booked. We did end up getting a room but it required some online booking chicanery to make it happen.
Tarin using some cleverness to keep Julian entertained in our darkest hour.

I'm really enjoying this blog of your trip out west. It's bringing back a similar trip Uncle Den and I took with the girls in the late 1970's - except we were in a VW camper and looked for campsites every evening instead of motels. Carrie read her Cricket magazines and Christie slept during most of the long ride.
Tarin looks right at home on the steps of Laura Ingall's house. That's a great picture! I'm glad to see that she is keeping Julian entertained with whatever that fuzzy stuff is. Good job Tarin!
Have a fun day.

Amy - you probably already know these - but I thought I would share just incase it might save you some headaches. 2 suggestions for great last minute hotels at discount prices - if you have internet - use priceline and pick a 4start hotel. I usually get the hilton or something like that for under a hundred. If you aren't on the internet - call 800 hotels 866-538-9285. They can look at all of the hotels and tell you where there is availability.
